World Environment Day 2019  
Faculty members and students enthusiastically participated in symbolically observing World Environment Day organised by SI Bombay Chembur in association with Pillai College of Architecture. A Talk on “Human Angle in Waste Management” by Ms. Jyoti Mhapsekar, President of Stree Mukti Sanghatana was followed by an exhibition on the topic, 'Waste to Resources'.

Ms. Mhapsekar in her talk gave a perspective on different types of household waste generated by urban communities and the mammoth issues of its safe disposal municipalities are unable to tackle. She explained the workings of the Waste Based Industry and how it is a pyramid, at the base of which are the women waste-pickers who are victims of poverty, inequality and caste system. The NGO-Stee Mukti sanghatana works for betterment of these communities in Mumbai.

She further emphasised that the students of architecture, business management and technology must be sensitised to the issues of waste management at its very source. She spoke of several ways in which householders can responsibly sort and handover directly to the waste pickers different kinds of household waste.

Lastly, she spoke about the benefits of composting organic kitchen waste within homes and communities. The NGO put on display home composting baskets they have developed and explained its working. Many faculty members and students purchased the basket.

The students pledged to continue to make efforts to conserve the environment in their own small and meaningful ways and spread the message in their communities.

National Girl Child Day Campaign in association with Child Rights and You (CRY)  
Social Service Committee of PiMSR is association with CRY organised National Girl Child Day Campaign on 4th March, 2020. This campaign aimed to spread awareness about the conditions faced by the girls in the society in today's time. This campaign also received social media coverage with #itsagirlthing

Participation in Mission Mangroves Project of United Way of Mumbai  
On 3rd March, 2020, Social Service Committee of PiMSR partnered with United Way of Mumbai for creating awareness on Mangroves Conservation. This event was a part of the Mission Mangroves Project. 39 students along with faculty members visited the Coastal & Marine Biodiversity Centre in Airoli, Navi Mumbai where, they were sensitized on the need for conserving mangroves.

A Talk on "The Ideology of Sewa" conducted by Ms. Shyamala Mohan, President of Shree Shashwat Foundation  
A Talk on the topic of "The Ideology of Sewa" was organised by the Social Service Committee of PiMSR on 13th January, 2020. The speaker, Ms. Shyamala Mohan, is a social activist, entrepreneur and President of an NGO 'Shree Shashwat Foundation'. Currently, seven PiMSR students are doing their internship under the guidance of Ms. Shyamala Mohan.

Tree Plantation Drive  
Around 150 students of PiMSR enthusiastically participated in the Tree Plantation Initiative and a River Cleaning Initiative on 11th January, 2020. The main aim of the drive was to raise awareness on the need to save the environment and plant more trees to negate the harmful effects of deforestation. Aniket, a student of PiMSR took the lead and explained the harmful effects of deforestation to the environment. After the talk, the students planted saplings in the CIDCO garden, Sector 16, New Panvel and Podi Visarjan Ghat, sector 15, New Panvel. More than 50 saplings were planted on that day. The programme concluded with all participants taking an oath to nurture the trees and protect the environment. The chief guest for the event were Tejas Kandpile, Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) Corporator; former Corporator Subhash Bhujbal; Gourav Hingane, Assistant Engineer with CIDCO Panvel; Shailesh Gaikwad, health inspector at PMC; Arun Kamble, Sanitary Inspector PMC; and Rakesh Bhujbal of PMC. Faculty members Dr. Celina Joy and Dr. Betty Sibil felicitated the guests.
